How does Hollywood produce, distribute and exhibit films to ensure success?

Hollywood is a huge part of film making. They make up to 120 big sell out films every year. Landing them billions of pounds. They are the biggest producers and are this because of the massive amount of films they produce yearly. And they can produce that many, because they have the money too. Last year they sold over 1.4 billion tickets to people wanting to see the Hollywood action movies. These tickets were sold at $10.98 so they made well over 15 billion. And that was just from selling the tickets to see the films they’d created. There are 6 main companies in the Hollywood industry. They are simply known as the big six. This is because they are all worth a fortune. Not only from the production and the making of the films that they create, but there are also other smaller companies within the big companies. The six major companies are ‘Walt Disney Studios, Warner Brothers, 20th Century fox, Columbia, Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios’ these all make many films a year, grossing huge amounts of money. So you can imagine how wealthy they are. We’re talking billions of dollars.
Because Hollywood is such a massive part of the film industry, they can afford to pay out mass amounts of money to get their film out there. They do this by printing posters, releasing teaser trailers, and posting things about the films online. For thousands to see. Like Hangover Part two for example. They had a budget of $35 million. And that was just for one film. Hollywood makes around 120 big films like that a year. But a Hollywood film with a budget of $35 million is quite low, so you wouldn’t be expecting the greatest. But they used the money wisely, and spent it on producers not actors, so they made it work. A few big blockbusters of this year are.. Rise of the planet of the apes, kick ass, the hangover part two, batman- the dark knight, and avatar. These are just a few of the many successful films created this year. They all grossed an amount in the opening weekend bigger than the amount that the film actually cost to produce. This is one of the things that Hollywood is famous for doing.  Batman – The dark knight had a budget of around $185 million. This was massive. With this they were able to get amazing actors. Like Morgan Freeman, Heath Ledger, and many more. They were also able to get a great director/ producer – Christopher Nolan. As you can imagine, with such a large budget it was to be a very successful film. I think it grossed over $1 billion, And was nominated for many awards. 9 Oscars and 8 BAFTAS.
The marketing side of films is by far the most important part. Because there is no point in bringing out a film for people to watch if they have no idea that it is coming out, or if they have no idea what the film is about. So part of the budget would go on marketing. So people know about the film being created. For example, when they bought out the hangover part two, they released a teaser trailer that can be found on the hangover website, and on youtube. This racked up thousands of views, and was all over the internet within hours. It was a global success by releasing the trailer. Before releasing the trailer, they made 6 posters. Each with one character on, they did this because they didn’t want to give too much of the film away, and they wanted to keep it a surprise, but let the viewer’s/ audience know that part two would be similar to part one. They then released the official website for the film. This had the actors on, the teaser trailer, and everything that you needed to know about the film. They then did advertising and cross promotions. They told us about the first movie, and how it would be similar with the first movie and made it clear we’re watching the same group of people get involved in a situation similar to what happened in that earlier film but only in a different place, and for a different reason. They’re all pretty funny but don’t show as much as I personally wanted them too, though to be fair they probably don’t need to. More things would continue to be released and told so we hit the “it happened again” theme but also it will be much funnier in their own right and show off the movie as its own thing and not just a bit of deja vu.
Hollywood has conquered the cinema market, by producing top quality, action filled films. That will be played in most cinemas, but would be better seen on the brand new digital screens that the major cinema streams have, these being. Vue, Cineworld, ODEON, and cinema de lux. These are all equipped with the latest technologically advanced screening and sound. And Hollywood has bought into these, enabling them to buy the best gear out there. This then puts pressure on the smaller cinemas, as they feel they have to buy the digital screening or they’ll lose customers because they’ll go elsewhere to watch a better quality film. but 9 times out of 10, the smaller cinemas will buy these, and then become bust because they aren’t making enough back by selling the tickets. So they put the prices up, and then people decide to go elsewhere.
I personally don’t mind where I watch films. But if I had to choose, then it’d definitely be in the cinema, with amazing quality of surround sound, and HD viewing. Plus its on a big screen so you see more of the action, and in better detail. But I have a 19” hd tele, that I like to watch films on, its so small that its possibly the best quality viewing you could ever think of. I don’t think that british films can even be compared to American films. They’re just on another level. They get $35 billion for a small film. and we get about that in pounds for a massive british film. But they have the money to pay out loads, so they may aswell. Lets take the inbetweeners movie as an example. It had a budget of around £16 million. Yet managed to gross over £40 million. So we can do what they do, make a lot on nothing. But we just do it on a smaller scale.
